The Bix Museum is excited to finally announce the museum’s timeline for the move to our new home located in the City Square Building at 112 W 2nd St, Davenport, IA, and our future plans to make our organization a long-term fixture of downtown Davenport. In this multi-phase plan, the museum aims to accomplish the relocation, settle in, then transform the space to grow our organization and keep the museum both relevant and fresh for both new and returning visitors. We will be closing our doors in the Redstone building June 6th to begin deconstruction. Through June, we will move our displays to be constructed in the design shown above with the goal of re-opening early to mid-July, having our grand opening Bix weekend (July 26th) to welcome the tens of thousands of people who walk down 2nd street that day. The following weekend, we welcome thousands to the Bix Festival and the Association of Midwest Museums conference, which we are a participating organization in both. A couple of weeks later, Alternating Currents uses the Skybridge Courtyard outside our doors, same as Common Chord’s weekly Live @ 5s throughout the summer.
Thanks to supporters like YOU, we have been able to make these steps as you’ve helped us raise $90,000 of our $120,000 goal so far. Over the next 2 months, we aim to reach these goals, and there are several ways you can help. We have created a list of sponsor opportunities to help us reach our goal and accomplish specific projects we want to tackle during the move. We are also looking for volunteers to help accomplish our goals. Once reopened, Bix Museum will move to an admission price to help provide more stable funding and provide value to our membership program. We would love it if we could make our first month free for all the people who want to see our new location!
After we have settled into the new space, we have a second phase of our project to transform our permanent exhibit with a rotational exhibit space. While the museum has consistently added new artifacts to our exhibit each year since 2020, a rotational gallery encourages more repeat visits and gives us the opportunity to show artifacts that don’t fit the main exhibit like exhibits on other topics related to Bix, Davenport, the 1920s, and Jazz, and better collaborate with likeminded organizations on joint projects and artifact lending. For this project, we anticipate needing $50,000 to begin developing it and want to start by Spring 2026. If you would like to support our relocation campaign, consider sending a donation today, or look at our campaign sponsorship list that will help us reach specific milestones. Thank you again for your support.
Your tax-deductible donation ensures the success of our relocation, or consider a multi-year pledge to help secure long-term sustainability for our organization! Your tax-deductible donation is essential for the preservation of Bix’s legacy and the cultural history of our community. Additionally, we would love to hear from you if you have any questions or comments on how to best serve the museum.
